NTTDATA Unlimited Future
14 LOOKING AT THE FUTURE XR and smart techniques The human side to network management remains as important as ever. That’s why NTT DATA is one of the specialist technology companies now pioneering use of immersive technologies for oversight and management of complex systems. Extended Reality (XR) is now used for surveillance and monitoring of remote assets, enabling field engineers on-site to coordinate intervention with engineering centres, providing access to all information and resources needed to deal with the most challenging tasks for rapid repair or simply routine maintenance. Immersive interfaces enable more effective control and oversight of the entire network, with operators now able to use “metaverse” techniques and XR to manage remote assets as if they were physically present. This new approach is being rolled out to industries as diverse as logistics, mining and healthcare to enable higher quality, more efficient management of assets located remotely on distributed networks. These new techniques demonstrate that Metaverse, for all its hype, is a reality already in a large number of industrial and management applications. Training and continuous improvement Every industry is dealing with a skills shortage right now, and that is leading to an intense focus on uses of emerging technologies in training and personal development. Use of XR accelerates training of individuals and, perhaps even more important, makes more efficient use of skilled engineers. This is another example of how the techniques at the heart of disaggregated, distributed networks are used to enhance operations, achieve higher levels of efficiency and drive margins for network operators.
